Central Market is a Texas grocery store chain that hosts an annual Passport event, celebrating the food, culture, and culinary traditions of a different country each year. For Passport Germany, we were tasked with transforming stores into an immersive German food experience, introducing shoppers to the country's diverse regional specialties through promotional displays, signage, and educational graphics.
I developed the campaign's visual identity by drawing inspiration from traditional German architecture, folk art, and regional craftsmanship. The distinctive shapes of the posters were inspired by the exposed wooden timber framing of traditional German half-timbered houses (Fachwerkhäuser), complemented by decorative blackletter typography and colorful folk art-inspired floral motifs. To capture the charm of regional craftsmanship, I collaborated with a team of illustrators to create a cohesive collection of colored pencil–style artwork. Together, we brought the culinary traditions of Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Freiburg, and the Mosel wine region to life through playful depictions of regional foods, ingredients, and landmarks.
The illustrated identity extended throughout the stores across overhead department signage, point-of-purchase displays, educational graphics, and promotional materials. A colorful illustrated map highlighted Germany's distinct food regions, while custom department signs and food illustrations helped shoppers discover German-inspired offerings throughout the store. The result was a vibrant, cohesive in-store experience that transformed Central Market into a celebration of German culinary heritage, inviting shoppers to explore the country's regional specialties one department at a time.
