Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages, a prominent bottler and distributor of Coca-Cola products, sought to enhance brand affinity at fortify their relationship with the Circuit of the Americas, and generate excitement for attendees at the 2023 F1 race. They asked that we decorate a vast 198-foot-wide blank wall leading to the main ticket office at the forefront of the racetrack to accomplish those directives. Our only requirement was to incorporate a Coca-Cola bottle and Topo Chico bottle in the design, but left the rest to our creative discretion.
Because we only had several days to dedicate to installation, the illustration style needed to be both simple and impactful. With this in mind, I created an illustration made of a limited palette of thirteen colors, which were limited to solid blocks with no need to blend between colors or create gradated areas of shading.
I conceived an energetic amalgamation of imagery paying homage to the vibrant city of Austin and the state of Texas, along with the three motorsports hosted at the track: Formula1, MotoGP, and Nascar. I seamlessly integrated these elements in inventive ways, creating a dynamic composition that traveled down the entire width of the wall. Examples of these combinations include the unmistakable shape of Texas filled with a racing checkerboard pattern. Adjacent to this, an armadillo with its banded armor is brought to life, animated by the swift movement of F1 vehicles zooming downwards. MotoGP racers speed down the handle of an acoustic guitar, paying tribute to the city's live music scene, and Austin's renowned Mexican free-tailed bats fly out from beneath the city's South Congress bridge. The products are also cleverly integrated; a motorsport racer in a helmet clutches a Coca-Cola like they would a celebratory bottle of champagne, and a F1 driver bursts from the right side excitedly clutching a Topo Chico.
The clients expressed their enthusiasm for the design, exclaiming that "70,000 plus people" walked through past the mural every day during the F1 race weekend, and that "fans loved it." They exclaimed that the race attendees loved the new photo-opportunity, stopping at each mural scene to take selfies and share their images across social media.
